Event Description

The 22nd Annual Women’s and Gender Studies Program Symposium will be held Friday, April 14, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Old Main Room of the Bone Student Center on the campus of Illinois State University.

The WGS Symposium will host undergraduate and graduate student panelists and presenters with work relevant to the study of women, gender and/or sexuality among the intersections. A schedule of presenters will be available closer to the date of the symposium.

This year’s keynote speaker Dr. Mariana Ortega will present her keynote address “Bodies of Color, Bodies of Sorrow, and Resistant Melancholia’” at 1 p.m.

Ortega is a professor of Philosophy at John Carroll University. Her main areas of research and interest are Latina Feminisms, Women of Color Feminisms, 20th Continental Philosophy, Phenomenology (Heidegger), Philosophy of Race, Latin American Feminism, and Aesthetics. Her research focuses on questions of self and sociality, the question of identity, and visual representations of race, gender, and sexuality. She has published articles in journals such as Hypatia, International Journal of Philosophical Studies, International Philosophical Quarterly, Radical Philoshophy Review, Critical Philosophy of Race and Contempoary Aesthetics. She is co-editor with Linda Martin-Alcoff of the anthology Constructing the Naiton: a Race and Nationalism Reader (SUNY 2009). In her monograph, In-Between: Latina Feminist Phenomenology, Multiplicity, and the Self (SUNY 2016), she develops a view of multiplicitous selfhood in light of exitential phenomenology and Latina feminisms. She is founder and director of the Latina Feminism Roundtable, a forum dedicated to discussions of Latina and Latin American feminisms.

In addition to the Keynote Address, Ortega will have an open lecture and public discussion with ART 311: Gender and Identity in Art History class on Thursday, April 13th from 2p.m. to 4p.m. in Williams Hall, Room 314.

Presentation papers and proposals for student presentations will be accepted until Friday, March 17. Please provide the paper or proposal with cover sheet and faculty sponsor to jlande4@IllinoisState.edu by 4 pm March 17, 2017.
