Alternative Winter Break International: Costa Rica
Alternative Winter Break (AWB) is a 10 or 14 day service opportunity where participants travel internationally and domestically to strengthen communities. These two trips, occurring during the academic winter break, focus on many different social issues like education, affordable housing, environmental, and much more. Learn to become a citizen of the world through strong direct service and reflection, and connect with other students who are looking to make a difference.
Students who are selected to serve on the international trip participate in bi-weekly pre-trip meetings throughout first semester to help educate themselves on the language and culture of the community they will be serving. Students who are selected to travel on the domestic trip will meet 3-5 times before their experience to learn more about their social issue and bond as a group. Both trips will have a free day to explore their local communities and enjoy the sites!
AWB-Domestic has 45 participants, which includes seven student leaders and three trip advisors, while the international trip has 26 total participants, including five trip leaders and two trip advisors. Students may only attend AWB-International once as a participant but can return as a Trip Leader.
Our international winter break rotates between Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Mexico. Past domestic trips have included New Orleans, LA and Silver Springs, FL. AWB-International usually leaves for their destination in late December and returns right before school begins in January. AWB-Domestic takes place right after the New Year.
