In an effort to provide support to lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) community, the Dean of Students Office has created Safe Zone orientation sessions. Safe Zone provides students, faculty and staff the opportunity to create safe spaces on campus that are highly visible and easily identifiable to lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) persons.
These Safe Zones are spaces where support and understanding are readily available and bigotry and discrimination are not tolerated. During the two-hour orientation session, participants engage in a mock coming-out exercise, discuss case studies, and receive resources and follow-up activities. At the conclusion of the two-hour orientation session, participants have the opportunity to sign a Member Agreement that affirms their intention to serve as an ally to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) population on campus. Upon return of the Member Agreement, participants receive a Safe Zone sign for posting in their office. Participants are not required to sign this agreement, but may simply attend the orientation session to increase their awareness and personal knowledge.
